The PICAXE microcontrollers are programmed (in BASIC or by drawing flowcharts) using the free Programming Editor software.
for further information about the software.

The Programming Editor software can be downloaded by clicking the links below. Note that you can only use the patches to update between the versions shown. If in doubt download the full version.

Latest Version Details

The Programming Editor software is free to educational and home users (non-commercial use). The software can be installed on all types of school network without charge, and students/teachers may use the software at home.

Please note if you have difficulty registering with old versions of Netscape use Internet Explorer instead.

  2. 'autoexec.nt' problems downloading after installing XP Service pack 2? Click here for explanation!
  3. Trouble with Belkin brand USB to serial adapter please click here!
  4. If you are using an old version of Windows and have difficulties installing the software, your Microsoft installer service may be out of date. For Windows 95, 98 or ME, run this Microsoft Installer update (instmsia.exe) and then restart the computer. If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows NT (with service pack 4 or later) then run this Microsoft Installer update (instmsiw.exe) and then restart the computer. XP users do not require any update. After restarting the computer re-run the downloaded Programming Editor installation file (this file is normally called bas805.exe)

Optional Programming Editor resources:

OCR/AQA A Level Assembler Code Compiler.
The OCR/AQA grade A2 Electronics courses (UK) uses a special 'assembler code' language. This special compiler allows PICAXE users to write PICAXE programs using the A level assembler code set. Further details are available here.

Virtual Serial Port - Remote Wizard.
Install this application on the computer that you want to act as the 'remote end' in a 'COM port over TCP/IP' connection to the computer running the Programming Editor software.
This software will direct the 'real' serial port on the remote computer to the TCP/IP connection. This enables the Programming Editor to use the serial port on the remote computer as if it was local serial port.

Logicator for PIC® and PICAXE® micros (version 3)

Easy to use graphical flowchart-based software for quick and easy programming of low-cost microcontroller chips. Suitable for secondary schools and home users, Logicator can be used to program all PICAXE chips and a range of standard PIC chips.

for further information about the software.

The Logicator for PIC® and PICAXE® micros software can be downloaded by clicking the link below.

The Logicator for PIC® and PICAXE® micros software is available as a single user shareware version for home/personal use, or as a site licence (any number of computers) for educational use (code LGC001 new site licence / code LGC002 upgrade from v1 or v2). Educational site licence holders may also choose to optionally purchase the 'home user add-on licence', which then allows students and teachers of the school to use the software at home (registered without further charge).

The software download will run in 'shareware mode' until a licence key is purchased and installed. The shareware version is not restricted in any way (apart from a nag screen), however if you use the software regularly you should register the software (£15, approx. $20).
‘Logicator for PIC® micros’ is the new name for ‘PIC-Logicator’ and is now developed, published and supplied directly by Revolution Education Ltd.

AXEpad for Windows/Linux/Mac (1.0.3)

AXEpad is a cross-platform development tool for PICAXE chips. It supports BASIC programming of PICAXE chips on all of the Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

The AXEpad software can be downloaded by clicking the link below.

AXEpad is a 'notepad' type application for development of PICAXE programs. It supports all PICAXE chips and has all the normal development features such as source code colour syntax highlighting, auto indentation, syntax check and download, debug and terminal windows etc. This is the recommended tool for Linux and Mac support of the PICAXE system. Note that although a Windows version is also available, we would recommend use of the PICAXE Programming Editor instead. Please see the installation instructions for system requirements.

Third party programming software options:

These approved software applications make use of the manufacturers PICAXE 'plugin' compiler to program PICAXE chips.
Note these software options are not required to use the PICAXE system, as the free Programming Editor software above provides both BASIC and flowchart programming options. However they provide additional programming options for schools who may already be using these software titles for non-microcontroller work.
All these titles can be purchased in the UK with eLearning Credits
